- Shawn Ryan, creator of the television series The Shield, was hired to write a screenplay for the film planned in 2002 when the project was being developed by Dimension Films Entertainment and leave.
- Mila Kunis said the tone-down PG-13 rating: "It's incredibly dark. You still get the essence of it. The only difference between R-rated and PG-13 is that it could not see as much blood . You might not see Squirting blood everywhere, but as far as the sadness and darkness and the distraught [nature] of these human beings are very caught on film.
